Present: – Lauren, Deborah, Stacy, Sujay, Kim, Eliza, Judy, Jordan (Walker) (from the Greens), Jim, (and someone I’m sure to have inadvertently forgotten)….and Steve.
Steve welcomed all to a breakfast menu specifically chosen for Lisa who was unable to join us and is suffering miserably with the Viking Virus/s. We all wished her well and enjoyed oatmeal with light cream and fresh blueberries, fruit, juice, raisin toast, coffee, and tea in her absence.
Steve brought along the Linneaus Symposium brochure: Global Trees: Releaf-Relief and spoke of the clever symposium dinner menu which will feature items produced by trees. He will also be contacting Cindy Johnson-Groh to possibly do a walk through of the MarketPlace and look at the daily features to identify tree related food items and determine the best way to do education with it. (who wants to wear the tree suit?)
Kim reported on her first (brilliantly successful) Lunch and Learn session and shared the topic covered by the guest speaker as well as some participant suggestions for future sessions and a few directed items for consideration by someone (me, I suppose). For example: 1.) Free lunch during educational sessions. 2.) J-term cooking class 3.) There should be a Big Hill Student Farm (there’s an idea!) 4.) Regular nutrition education meetings/presentations.
Participant comment about the experience was VERY favorable and encouraged a repeat event.
It seems to Steve that our students are starving for nutrition information. It may be we should continue the intern efforts in that direction for another semester or two?
Eliza reported on progress of the Big Hill Student Farm and associated logistics/labor/funding challenges. There is great optimism that it’s really going to happen !
Deborah would like to see Sustainability be incorporated into required curriculum which elicited comments from Jim and Steve about the Sustainability Ethos Document and Commission 150 Task Force inclusion – or not.
Jordan introduced information about Eco-League Colleges. Jim and Deborah commented about their familiarity with the league and that sustainability is woven throughout the curriculum of member schools. Steve thinks this topic should be sent to Lisa as a future agenda item to be reported on and discussed in greater detail
Technical difficulties with A/V equipment forced a move to the 3 Crowns Room to view the Fridays at the Farm video. None in attendance said they hated the film but having run out of time for discussion, Steve can offer only his opinion that he enjoyed his second viewing as much as his first. Students present were offered the DVD to host a public presentation if they wished. Jim was given a copy of the DVD for his office library.
